My favourite gift to give (and receive!) at Christmas time is definitely one I can eat! Whether it be delicious truffles, bite size pieces of rich fudge, cookies or something savoury like spiced nuts or home made chutney, giving something home made (and edible) gives a personal touch to Christmas gift giving.
I recently shared a recipe for Santa’s Favourite Christmas Cookies. They are so delicious and festive looking and would be a perfect gift all wrapped up in a jar or some cellophane and ribbon. However, another fun way to give Christmas cookies without actually having to bake them (🙌) is to layer all the ingredients in a jar with some mixing and assembling instructions for the gift recipient. All they will need to do is add the wet ingredients (some butter, an egg and some vanilla) – then mix, roll and bake (and EAT!)
This is such a super easy approach – the most difficult thing is actually making sure you buy the right size jar! I found about a 1 litre jar is perfect for my Christmas cookie recipe – I found this out the hard way after using a much larger jar initially! I got to the end of my dry ingredients and had a jar that was still 3/4 empty!! Noooooo!!
Fortunately, perseverance pays and I have this cute cookie jar, ready to give this Christmas.
To make your own Christmas Cookies in a jar you will need:
1 1/3 cup of plain flour
1 tsp baking powder
1/4 tsp salt
1 cup of rolled oats
1 cup of red and green chocolate buttons (or mint M&Ms like I used)
1/2 cup dark chocolate chips
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/3 cup desiccated coconut
1/3 cup slivered almonds
1 x 1 litre glass jar with lid (I got mine from Kmart for $5, but I also saw them at IKEA for the same price)
small piece of fabric for the top of the jar (you could use Christmas fabric, I used tulle)
baking instructions for the gift recipient (you can hand write a label if you like, or alternatively you can download and print the attached printable).
You can download the labels here.
How to assemble
Wash out glass jar and allow to dry completely before adding any ingredients.
Add each ingredient layer by layer in the following order:
Flour, baking powder and salt
To get a neat line between each layer of ingredients I used a spatula and just ran it across the top of the layer around the edge of the jar. But it really does not have to be perfect! I always say ‘perfection is in the imperfection’ and this is certainly true for anything hand made.
Once all the ingredients have been added, close the jar, add the festive fabric and ribbon and attach the gift label.
And that is it! All done! ENJOY!!! 🎅
